UAE praised for humanitarian gesture

(WAM) The humanitarian assistance measures undertaken by the United States with a range of relief organisations do not discriminate against people living in the Taliban-controlled areas of Afghanistan and efforts are on to reach out to the needy in all parts of the country, according to Douglas Hunter, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Population, Refugees and Migration at the US State Department. Participating in a world Telnet conference, he said that the approach to delivering succour and relief was universal to the victims of a 'totality of the crisis' that had been the result of misrule, drought and famine, according to a report in 'Khaleej Times.'

Fielding questions from the participating stations of Damascus, Cairo and Abu Dhabi, Hunter cited the urgent need for stepping up the quantum of relief supplies, in the next four to six weeks, before the onset of severe winter that would hamper relief efforts. 'We are reaching out to over three and a half million people now and the figure of the needy is likely to double as the military operations continue,' he said. He commended the help and assistance provided by the UAE and other countries in the region, as well as the stand taken by the Organisation of Islamic Conference in denouncing the November 11 terrorist attacks on the US. The relief work and assistance to Afghanistan, he said, would continue well after the objective was achieved, and a broad-based government was formed there, with measures initiated for economic reconstruction.
