The Hague: The UAE is deeply disappointed at the international community's inability to put an immediate end to the dangerous, aggravating tragedy the Syrian people are experiencing and which has so far claimed more than 100,000 lives and left millions homeless in a flagrant violation of the international law principles and international humanitarian law.

'We condemn and reject in the strongest possible terms all crimes against humanity and the use of chemical weapons in conflicts. We also denounce the use of chemical weapons in the Ghouta area of Damascus, Syria, in which thousands of civilians and children were killed and we call for revealing the truth and bring those responsible to justice,' Abdullah Hamdan Alnaqbi, Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates to the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and Permanent Representative at the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) told the 18th conference of the OPCW, in The Hague.

'The UAE is still firmly believing in the objectives of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), a unique multilateral disarmament agreement strives for destruction of existing chemical weapons stockpiles and prohibits activities like development, production, possession, storage, transfer and use of chemical weapons and their precursors. Through this convention, the world is committed to deliver remarkable progress towards total disarmament and prohibition of weapons of mass destruction for the safety of the humanity at large ,' he said.

'Regrettably, we are shocked to see the use of chemical weapons in front of the international community eyes to kill innocent civilians including children in a gross contravention of international laws,' he added.

He also regretted the lack of progress in efforts to convene the international conference on establishing a zone free of weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
