The UAE has reiterated its commitment to the UN Agreement on children's rights, saying that the improvement of the lives of millions of children throughout the world demands the collective efforts of the international community to find a just and lasting solution to the causes of armed conflicts, poverty and the deterioration of humanity situation. Mona Faleh Al Qahtani made the statement last night when she read the UAE address to the UN General Assembly's Third Committee, charged with discussing the agreement's article, which deals with protection and enhancement of children's rights.

She expressed the UAE's support for all sincere efforts being exerted by the United Nations and its affiliated bodies to enhance the rights of children and provide protection for them. She commended the international body for attaching great importance to the issue by intensifying its public awareness campaign on the rights of Children, and pointed out that protecting children and caring for them were the foundation stone which leads to the survival of the human societies.

She said inspite of the increasing number of countries, which ratified the agreement, and their participation in the numerous international conferences on children's rights, the plight of millions of children, particularly in the developing countries, continued to deteriorate, as they live in abject poverty and suffer from deadly contagious diseases like AIDS, which kills millions of children annually and make million others orphans, in addition to being victims of sexual abuse and child soldiers in civil and regional wars.

She reiterated the need for countries to respect and implement the UN agreement and recommendations made during international conferences held under the umbrella of the United Nations, which call for the implementation of development programmes in poor and developing countries in order to find a just and lasting solution to the causes of armed conflicts and the deteriorating condition of millions of children around the world by finding solutions to the causes of armed conflicts, including ending foreign occupation.

On the situation of children in the UAE, Al Qahtani said that the UAE government attaches greater importance to child care, including the development of children and protecting them from any form of abuse. "This stems from the UAE government's deep belief that the successful development of human being starts from early childhood,” she said, adding "That's why the UAE government attaches greater importance to child care, the development of children and protecting them from any form of abuse. It is also the reason why the UAE signed and remained committed to the UN agreement, as per the teachings of Islam and UAE tradition and culture.”

She cited the recent UNICEF report which praised the UAE for its significant progress in the area of childcare, including providing protection, healthcare, education and cleanliness for children, in addition to social care and other forms of human rights which children must enjoy.
