The UAE yesterday reiterated its readiness to provide enhanced support to the Iraqi people. "The UAE will continue to stand by the side of the Iraqi people, supporting their humanitarian issues as well as other vital issues," said Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the UAE Red Crescent Society.

In remarks during a meeting with the delegation of the Iraqi Red Crescent Society (RCS), Sheikh Hamdan said the role played by the UAE in Iraq was a fulfilment of humanitarian obligations, not only towards the wider human family but also towards brethren who happened to have been afflicted by disasters.

"We will not hesitate to support the rehabilitation and reconstruction work, particularly rehabilitation of the basic infrastructure which has terribly been affected. Our support in this sphere falls in line with the vision of President H.H Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. It also follows in the tradition set by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan," Sheikh Hamdan told the Iraqi RCS delegation headed by Saeed Ismail Haqi.

Sheikh Hamdan added: "The concerns of the Iraqi people and indeed, the entire Iraqi question will continue to be a top priority for us. We remain committed to supporting our Iraqi brethren until the current tragic situation unravels," said Sheikh Hamdan.

He told the delegation that the UAE Red crescent society was closely monitoring the humanitarian situation through its field offices in Iraq, adding that everything is being done to alleviate the suffering of the most vulnerable groups. He said that the RCS would not hesitate to participate in the capacity building of its Iraqi counterpart which is facing huge challenges, given the enormity of the problems on the ground.

For his part Al Haqi commended the UAE role in Iraq, noting that the UAE continues to be a strong backer of the Iraqi people. He pointed out that the UAE was the first country to come to the aid of the Iraqi people through its various humanitarian initiatives. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
