TEHRAN - The first shipment of UAE relief aid to the victims of the earthquake that hit parts of Iran reached yesterday. Ali Mohsin Hamili, UAE's Charge d'Affaires in Tehran, said that the relief supplies, ordered by H.H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, showed the UAE's readiness to extend assistance to Arab and Islamic peoples at times of crisis. In a statement upon the arrival of the first planeload of supplies, Hamili said that the second plane would also arrive tomorrow carrying medical supplies and other relief items. Saleh Al Tai'i, Head of the UAE Red Crescent delegation accompanying the supplies, said that the humanitarian assistance was a symbolic gesture, expressing the UAE's sympathy and solidarity with the Iranian people.

He expressed the Society's readiness to supply more supplies if the need arises. Meanwhile, Mustafa Muhaqif, a senior official of the Iranian Red Crescent Society, expressed Iran's gratitude and appreciation for the UAE people and leadership for the assistance. He said that latest statistics showed the quake left 250 people dead, 1000 injured, complete destruction of 30 villages and damaging around 70 other villages. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
