Foreign Minister Rashid Abdullah said today that the UAE would remain committed to its even-handed policy of resolving disputes between countries through bilateral understanding, not through polarization and confrontation, as envisioned by President H. H Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Speaking about the UAE foreign policy over the last three decades, the minister said that the UAE was a country founded on the principles of peace, cooperation and friendship and would remain to be so.

He paid tribute to President Sheikh Zayed for realising the aspirations of his compatriots in unity and forging a viable federation that embraced what were virtually scattered brothers into one family. The process of forging a common UAE entity was a daunting task, but the resilience and determination which that objective was realized meant that the UAE was endowed with a great leader, said the minister in remarks made at the Zayed Centre.

Asked about the recent remarks by U.S President George Bush in which termed two of UAE neighbours, Iraq and Iran as belonging to what he described as "The axis of evil", the Minister said that "good" exists in all countries and among all nations. He said that many nations in the world are peace loving and if there are differences of policies, then such differences should best be resolved within the context of the international bodies that have been set up. If there is a need to re-structure these bodies, then such an option should be taken, he said.

"The world has to find a suitable framework for cooperation so that we do not resort to labelling certain countries as evil or terrorist simply because we do not agree with their policies", he said. The Minister revealed that despite differences with Iran over the issue of the occupied islands, the UAE is still engage in dialogue with Teheran with the aim of resolving this issue.
