GENEVA: The United Arab Emirates has renewed its commitment to promote and protect human rights through embedding basic human rights principles in its constitution and legislations.

This came during a session to review the UAE's state report on the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), made before the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities last night at headquarters of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights (UNCHR) in Geneva.

Sanaa Mohammed Suhail, Under-secretary of the Ministry of Community Development, addressed the session, saying the country's efforts culminated in the federal act no. 29 for 2006, which recognises rights of the persons with disabilities.

The UAE delegation included Obaid Salem Al Zaabi, UAE Permanent Representative to the UN and Other International Organisations in Geneva, in addition to representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Youth and Sports Authority, Ministry of Education, Human Rights Department at the Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Justice, Zayed Higher Organisation for Humanitarian Care & Special Needs (ZHO), Community Development Authority, General Women's Union, Dubai Club for Disbaled and anti-human trafficking section at the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation.

Sanaa Suhail said the UAE became a member of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2010, and since then, it had demonstrated its firm commitment to the ongoing development of a society characterized by tolerance, compassion and social justice to its population, including citizens of 200 countries who enjoy the economic opportunities provided by the country.

She referred to the legislative milestones, such as the issuance of law no. 2 for 2014 on the rights of persons with disability in Dubai and the draft cabinet resolution on the healthcare services provided to the persons with disability in the UAE and setting quality standards for such services.

She also underlined the concerted efforts to adopt a national strategy for disability, in alignment with the UAE Vision for 2021 which affirms UAE's commitment to the CRPD.

Sanaa Suhail emphasised the importance of regional and international cooperation and sharing expertise in the fields of services to the persons with disability. – Emirates News Agency, WAM -http://www.wam.ae/en/news/emirates-international/1395298934048.html
