UAE seeks stronger strategic relations with France: FNC Speaker

PARIS: In keeping with directives from President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE is interested in promoting its strategic relations, co-operation and partnership with France, as these ties represent a model in the areas of education, economy, culture, energy and industry, Dr. Amal Abdullah Al Qubaisi, Speaker of the Federal National Council (FNC), said during an official visit to France.

Praising the growing relations between the UAE and France, she warned that "some regimes in the region expose their peoples to sanctions and isolation, interfere in the internal affairs of other countries, incite sectarian strife and exercise several forms of terrorism, prompting the states and societies of the region to defend their rights and sovereignty."

Al Qubaisi, speaking during a meeting with French Minister of State for European Affairs Harlem Desir, said the scope of the co-operation reflects the existing mutual confidence between the two countries, as well as the importance of their joint planning for the future.

Noting that she was a member of the Joint UAE-French Committee, Al Qubaisi highlighted the importance of parliamentary diplomacy in strengthening relations with other countries and relevant international organisations, as well as in combating terrorism.

Further, the French Minister of State for European Affairs praised the UAE for backing peace and stability and promoting tolerance in the region and beyond.

He cited the recent visit of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, and his meeting with Pope Francis, head of the Catholic Church, as a message of peace, tolerance and noble values from the UAE.

France strongly backs the UAE in various arenas, Minister Desir said, and noted that the recent creation of a Ministry of State for Tolerance by the UAE reflects these values, that the UAE defends and upholds.

He further praised Abu Dhabi's Economic Vision 2030 for seeking to promote the use of renewable and alternative energy resources, knowledge-based economy and social and economic development, as well as the UAE's efforts to establish security and stability in the region and beyond, deliver humanitarian and development aid to other countries and support refugees.

Desire also said that he was delighted at meeting Al Qubaisi, the first woman in the Arab region to head a parliamentary body.

Relations between France and the UAE are exceptional in several political, cultural and military arenas, the French minister noted, citing the Louvre Abu Dhabi museum and the Paris-Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi as two major cultural projects being carried out by both countries.
