UAE seeks to benefit from Switzerland's experience in Food Security

Bern, Switzerland: A high-profile delegation from the UAE's Ministries of Presidential Affairs and Economy, as well as local food control authorities, has concluded its visit to the Swiss capital, Bern, where it held collaborative talks with counterparts on strategies for tackling challenges in food security and sustainability.

The talks examined solutions for securing a sustained national food supply, as well as best practices in food storage and the role of the private sector in strengthening the food supply chain. The UAE delegation also explored ways in which the Swiss expertise could be effectively leveraged to benefit the UAE and eliminate its food issues.

Organised under the direct supervision of Sultan bin Saeed Al Mansouri, Minister of Economy, the visit was organised in coordination with Switzerland's National Economic Supply Agency (NESA) and Switzerland's Federal Office for National Economic Supply (FONES).

The visit came as part of an on-going partnership between the UAE and Switzerland to identify opportunities in food security, which has remained a key concern for the GCC with imported food accounting for 80 - 90 percent of all food consumed.

The delegation was led by Juma Mohammed Al Kait, Assistant Under-Secretary for Foreign Trade Affairs at the UAE Ministry of Economy.

Commenting on the purpose of the visit, Juma Al Kait said, "With the UAE importing about 80 to 90 percent of its food, the issue of food security continues to be a top priority for the UAE Government. This challenge will become more complex as world population climbs steadily, and food demand increases by more than 50 percent over the next 20 years.

"The UAE is working hard on all fronts to maximise its own food independence by investing in the right knowledge, technology and practices. We are happy that we have an excellent and amiable partner in Switzerland. The Swiss have met with remarkable success in tackling their food security issues, and the UAE has much to learn from them." – Emirates News Agency, WAM
