The UAE yesterday signed the convention on the establishment of the Arab Women Organisation in Cairo, thus becoming the first Arab country to ratify the agreement. The agreement was signed on behalf of the UAE by Ahmed Ali Al Mail Al Zaabi, UAE Ambassador to Egypt and Permanent Representative to the Arab League. Mohammed Rudwan bin Khadra, Adviser to Arab League Secretary General signed for the Arab League. Al Zaabi said in a statement that the UAE became the first country to ratify the agreement, in line with the directives of H.H President Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, which directed that every effort be exerted to support joint Arab work.

He added that the ratification of the agreement also resulted from the keenness of H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, the President's wife and Chairwoman of the UAE General Women's Union, who has been working to uplift the status of women and improve their lot across the Arab world. He said the agreement emanated from the Cairo Declaration made at the Arab Women Summit which convened in the year 2000. For his part, Mohammed Rudwan bin Khadra bin Khadra, who also heads the legal department of the Arab league, lauded the efforts of President H.H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and his concern for Arab co-operation in matters of vital interest, especially Arab women development. He said the agreement would reinforce Arab women solidarity and co-ordination and widen the scope of their contribution in various fields. He added that the agreement will come into effect following its endorsement by seven Arab countries. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
