UAE signs immunities and privileges agreement with OPCW

The Hague - Under mandate from Foreign Minister H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed, the UAE Ambassador to Belgium Ali Thani Al Suwaidi signed here yesterday, on behalf of the government of the UAE, an agreement with the Organisation for Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) on immunities and privileges.

The agreement was signed on OPCW's behalf by its Director-General, Ambassador Rogelio Pfirter. The 12-article agreement provides for immunities and privileges of the OPCW, including immunity from any form of legal process. The OPCW's property, wherever located and by whomsoever held, shall be immune from search, foreclosure, seizure, all forms of attachment, injunction or other legal process.

OPCW and its property shall be exempt from all types of direct taxes and customs tariffs.

According to the agreement, the UAE shall recognise and accept as valid the United Nations. Laissez-passer issued to the officials of the OPCW. The agreement also defines means for dispute settlement. It will enter into force from the date of submitting UAE's ratification document to the OPCW's Director General. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
