UAE steps up drive against illegals

The UAE is tightening the noose around illegal Asian migrants with intensified raids on suspected hideouts and the introduction of a new investigative departure form to ensure they benefit from a four-month amnesty and do not think of coming back. Immigration authorities said all illegal migrants permitted to leave under the general amnesty announced on January 1 must fill a new form giving details of their stay in the country, how they sneaked in, who helped them and how they transferred money out.

The new application form is available at all immigration offices dealing with illegal residents under the four-month pardon and it is titled "form for departing infiltrators according to the general amnesty decision." Official figures showed only around 8,000 illegal residents turned up at immigration departments throughout the UAE in January, a fraction of the more than 150,000 foreigners who left the UAE in a few weeks during the first general amnesty five years ago.
