Jakarta - The UAE's support to the victims of the devastating earthquake that recently hit the Indonesian island of Java has been well-received by the friendly people of Indonesia, said Yousef Rashid Al Sharhan, UAE ambassador to Indonesia.

"The people of Indonesia are grateful for the support provided by the UAE during their plight. The swift move of the UAE leadership under President H.H Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan to allocate US$4 million for urgent aid to the quake victims was a sincere gesture for which the people of Indonesia are grateful", said Al Sharhan, adding that the UAE among the first to reach out to the victims. This timely delivery of aid, said Sharhan, considerably alleviated the suffering of those worst affected by the calamity.

As he received members of the UAE Red Crescent Society (RCS) delegation in Indonesia Al Sharhan hailed the noble humanitarian work done by the RCS on the ground. The RCS, he said, was among the first organisations to arrive and immediately erected a field hospital on the second day of the disaster.

"The spirit of the RCS volunteers was equally commendable as the team succeeded to overcome all the difficulties," he said.

The UAE envoy further praised the UAE search and rescue team of the Abu Dhabi police, saying that they were the first Arab and Islamic team and the second international team to arrive at the scene. "The people of the UAE are proud of the role played by both the RCS and Abu Dhabi Police team", said Sharhan. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
