A delegation from the Ministry of Interior left Abu Dhabi yesterday for Bangladesh to follow up the file of compensation, rehabilitation and integration of former Bangladeshi child camel jockeys. The Ministry's committee in charge of the file will hold talks with Bangladeshi government officials after which they will announce the closure of the file for good.

Compensations paid by the UAE to 879 eligible former child jockeys amounted to US$ 1.5 million.

While in Dhaka, the UAE officials will meet with United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) resident representatives to review programmes implemented by the UAE for rehabilitation of those children, their re-integration into their local community and improvement of their living conditions in various provinces in Bangladesh.

Major General Nasser Al Menhali, chairman of the committee, said the UAE has dealt with the child camel jockey issues with a humane spirit, supported projects for protection of those children and honoured all its commitments towards projects carried out in partnership with the UNICEF. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
