UAE to evaluate Bofors naval guns

Swedish armsmaker Bofors will bring its 40Mk3 and 57Mk3 naval guns to the UAE Navy for evaluation tests, a senior official said. This follows an offer made to the UAE about a month ago. While the multi-target 57Mk3 comes in both stealth and non-stealth versions, the above-deck gun 40Mk3 can be used for air defence on larger vessels or as the main armament on smaller craft.

In Egypt, Bofors' mine clearing vehicle was put through evaluation tests as recent as last week. The machine can detect and clear anti-personnel and tank mines of up to 12 kilos. On detection, the Mini-Guzzler can either detonate the mines or chew them up into harmless pieces. Though orders have yet to materialise, Bofors officials are confident that the company will score a breakthrough in the Middle East defence market soon. "We are entering the Middle East for the first time as it is only now that the Swedish government has begun easing restrictions on arms sales to this part of the world.

Meanwhile, Bofors has been awarded a $50 million contract by India to supply spare parts for the 155mm howitzers used during the Kargil conflict in 1999. Bofors will also take part in a global tender for field howitzers that India is expected to announce. The company was blacklisted for nearly a decade by India for paying kickbacks to middlemen in 1986. But the performance of the guns in the Kargil conflict has put the company back in good standing.
