posted on 14/08/2004: 638 views

A large number of Iraqi refugees living in various parts of Pakistan are to be airlifted back home. The UAE is dispatching two planes to transport 146 Iraqis, which represent the second batch of Iraqi refugees to be transported by the UAE from Pakistan to Iraq after several years of seeking refuge in Pakistan.

The gesture, which is in accordance with the directives of President H.H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces and under the direct follow-up of Lt. General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Chief of Staff of the UAE Armed Forces, is in response to an appeal by the United Nations Higher Commission on Refugees, UNHCR, and the International Committee of the Red Cross, ICRC, which requested the UAE's assistance in repatriating the Iraqi refugees back home.

The UAE has ordered a rapid coordination with the Pakistani authorities to quickly transport the refugees back home. The initiative is also in line with Sheikh Zayed's policy on humanitarian issues and contribution in support of the efforts of the international organisations. It is also a true expression of the country's commitment to reach out to the Iraqi people to help them overcome their present predicament. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
