The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs will convene the first ever Pacific Island-Arab League Summit entitled "Prospects for Cooperation between the Arab world and the Pacific Islands" to be held in Abu Dhabi at the Emirates Palace on June 23rd- 24th 2010.

Following his visit to the Pacific region in February 2010, UAE Foreign Minister His Highness Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan was inspired by the unexplored opportunities that could be developed between the Arab world and the island states of the Pacific and the potential to strengthen relations on the political, economic and cultural levels.

Invitations have been sent to all 21 member countries of the Arab League and 14 Pacific Island countries and the meeting will provide an ideal opportunity to explore social, political and economic partnerships and to exchange dialogue on the issues and challenges that are affecting both regions.

The meeting is set to create the foundation for a strong friendship and cooperation framework between the Pacific island states and the countries of the Arab world and follows in the footsteps of the Pacific Islands Partnership programme launched earlier this year committing 183 million dirham (US$50 million) to finance specific projects and partnerships in the Pacific Islands in key development areas, including renewable energy, education, social and health care services as well as infrastructure.

Commenting on the upcoming meeting, Sheikh Abdullah said "Following the launch of the UAE's Partnership in the Pacific Programme and with the support of the Secretary General of the Arab League, we are honoured to launch the Pacific Island-Arab meeting to strengthen Pacific-Arab relations. I am delighted that His Excellency Amr Moussa, Secretary General of the Arab League, leaders of the Pacific island states and foreign ministers of the Arab world have agreed to attend and participate in this historic meeting in Abu Dhabi." The event taking place on Thursday will welcome dignitaries from across the Pacific region including the Crown Prince of Tonga and Prime Ministers from the Cook Islands, Niue, Fiji, the Soloman Islands, Tuvalu and Vanuatu along with the President of Palau and several foreign ministers from the Arab world. The meeting promises to provide an historic opportunity to work together and agree a way forward developing partnerships in the areas of renewable energy, tourism and hospitality, healthcare and education and combating climate change. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
