Ibrahim Al Banai, the Arab Chess Federation President and the International Chess Federation (FIDE) Executive Bureau member, and the Dubai Chess and Culture Club President, expressed his delight on UAE hosting one of the rounds of the International Grand Prix Chess series in 2002, with a US$6 million prize money to be presented by the FIDE to the winners. "It will be the Grand Chess Championship in the World with its USUS$6 million prize money. Also it is going to be the biggest chess event held in the UAE after the 1986 Dubai Chess Olympiad," said Al Banai. He added, "world's top 32 chess players will take part in the UAE series.

The current World champion Vishwanathan Anand will be on top of the list, with Garry Kasparov, Vladimir Kramnik, Alexi Shirov and a host of other stars will be participating in the Grand Prix in Dubai next year." Al Banai said that the FIDE had opened a marketing office in Dubai for financial support to its tournaments. "The FIDE have a marketing committee. They also have a marketing office in London and now in Dubai. In the coming months they will have new offices in the U.S. and East Asia. Al Banai said that this would be the second time UAE and Dubai host the FIDE meeting. "The first time we hosted the FIDE meeting was in 1995, it was held at the Dubai Municipality. But now the FIDE meeting will be held at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel, in Dubai."

The Dubai Chess Club chairman said, "The FIDE secretary will arrive on June 28 to start preparing for the meeting, which will be chaired by Ilyumzhinov Kirsan, the FIDE chairman on whose instruction the meeting is to be held in Dubai. Florenso Campomanos, the honorary president of the FIDE, will also attend the meeting." (The Gulf News)
