New York: The UAE has ratified the Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and is working to present the ratified documents to the UN headquarters within a few days. This was announced by Abdul Aziz Bin Nasir Al Shamsi, the UAE's permanent ambassador to the UN, in his address to the UN conference to review the implementation of the Barbados Programme of Action on Sustainable Development of Small Islands Developing States.

The conference in the Mauritian capital of Port Louis called for a pro-active strategy, dubbed the "Mauritius strategy" to continue the implementation the action programme. The conference was attended by 18 presidents, vice-presidents and prime ministers, about 60 ministers and nearly 2,000 delegates.

Al Shamsi said President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan had issued on January 8 a Federal Decree on the ratification of the Kyoto Protocol. He added that the Decree reiterated the UAE's commitment to all international agreements and conventions aimed at protecting the environment and at encouraging the adoption of mechanisms for a clean sustainable development of the environment.

Al Shamsi stressed the importance of the Mauritius conference which was held a few days after the tsunami which wreaked havoc on several Southeast Asian countries, most of which are small islands and developing states. "As we in the UAE once again express our condolences to the governments and people of the countries affected by this natural disaster, we wish to also express our deep concern over the continuing fragility of the economies of these countries," he said. Al Shamsi also cited some of the UAE's contributions aimed at boosting development programmes in developing countries. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
