Islamabad - The UAE and Pakistan have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for rebuilding a quake-ravaged hospital at Muzaffarabad in Kashmir as part of the UAE's contribution to efforts to reconstruct facilities destroyed by the quake that hit Pakistan in October 2005.

The MoU was inked by the visiting representative of the UAE Government Juma Mubarak Al Junaibi, Under Secretary of Department of Municipalities and Agriculture in Abu Dhabi, and General Nadem Ahmed, Deputy Chairman of the Agency for Reconstruction of quake-hit regions. UAE Ambassador in Pakistan Mohammed Ali Al Shamsi along with members of the delegation accompanying Al Junaibi were present at the signing ceremony.

Al Junabi said that his trip to Pakistan was ordered by President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan with the aim of assessing the situation on the ground at the quake-hit regions in order to get first hand information on projects needed there. He added the delegation toured hospitals, universities and schools affected by the quake.

He said the new hospital would replace the old 250-bed facility which offered health services to around two million people. According to him, a meeting was held today with the project consultants to study their requirements for prompt commencement of work. 'The UAE gives top priority to building of hospitals and then educational institutions,' he explained. A report on requirements of the quake-ravaged areas will be prepared in coordination with Pakistani reconstruction agency. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
