UAE to rush relief supplies to drought-hit Mauritania

The UAE Red Crescent Society (RCS) will dispatch urgent aid to drought-hit population in Mauritania amid growing concerns of severe consequences of the drought spell. Acting on directives given by Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and RCS President, the agency will carry out an urgent humanitarian and relief programme to assist the Mauritanian people affected by drought.

RCS Board Chairman Khalifa Nasser Al Suweidi said the programme would provide essential requirements to help affected people face consequences emanating from lack of rain which is aggravating the threat of drought. The spell of drought has led to a marked cut in arable land and pastures.

'Funds have already been transferred to the UAE Embassy in Nouakchott to purchase necessary relief and food supplies so as to be distributed to drought-hit families. Some 192 out of 216 affected villages are in need of urgent assistance,' he said, adding that the relief operation will be executed in coordination with the Mauritanian Red Crescent.
