UAE to rush urgent relief to flood-victims in Tanzania

The UAE Red Crescent Authority (RCA) has swept into action to deliver urgent relief to population affected by flash floods in Tanzania, a senior RCA announced here today.

Khalifa Nasser Al Suweidi, RCA Chairman, said that relief agencies had immediately acted to implement instructions of Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and RCA President, to rush emergency humanitarian assistance to the affected population in the East African country in a bid to ease their suffering and improve their humanitarian conditions.

Sheikh Hamdan directed the RCA to answer aid appeals made to it by other international organisations and Tanzanian authorities.

'We are coordinating relief operations with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and Tanzanian relief organisations to deliver the urgent basic requirements of the flood victims from food and medical supplies to tents and utensils,'he added.

Reports received by the RCA from Tanzania indicate that the country flash floods were caused by fall of torrential rains, forcing locals to leave their homes.

Over 100,000 families are living now in camps lacking simple basic services. The disaster has also led to an outbreak of Rift Valley Fever (RVF), infecting around 300,000 heads of cattle, thus adding to the already worsening situation of cattle herders, who depend on animals as the main source of living.
