The United Arab Emirates is sending two planeloads of medicines to Somalia where the lives of thousands of displaced people are endangered by the outbreak of cholera after using contaminated water.

The first of the two planes, each of which is to carry 40 tons of medical supplies, will leave here Wednesday for Mogadishu along with a high level delegation from the Red Crescent Society (RCS).

According to Khalifa Al Suweidi, RCS chairman, an integrated relief programme was laid out to help in staving off the killer disease and prevent its spread in the strife-torn Horn of Africa country.

"The dispatch of relief is in implementation of instructions by President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan to render humanitarian assistance to the people of Somalia as expeditiously as possible," said Al Suweidi. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
