UAE to send supplies to Pakistan and Afghanistan

The UAE Red Crescent Society, RCS, has sent relief supplies worth Dh100,000 to earthquake victims in the Gilgit region of Pakistan. Fifty people died and thousands became homeless in the earthquakes that recently hit parts of this highland region. Meanwhile, the UAE decided to extend material assistance to Afghanistan comprising 100 vehicles, 20 percent of them heavy vehicles, 200 wireless radios, 100 computers and accessories, 200 electronic equipment, and more than 26,100 pieces of clothes.



Abdullah Al Shamsi, UAE Ambassador to Pakistan and non-resident Ambassador to Afghanistan, who met Afghan President Hamid Karzai delivered to him a letter from Lt. General Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Armed Forces Chief of Staff, containing the decision made at the instructions of President H.H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Karzai expressed his gratitude to Sheikh Zayed for the assistance and for his mediation in narrowing differences between his country and Pakistan. Afghanistan and Pakistan swapped hundreds of prisoners as a result of the UAE mediation. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
