UAE to take part in rescue operations

The UAE will participate in international rescue and search missions following membership of the International Search and Rescue Advisory Group.

It has become the second Arab country to join the International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG).

The body is a global network of more than 80 countries and disaster response organisations under the United Nations umbrella. Dubai Police's Rescue Department will represent the UAE in its international search and rescue missions.

Brigadier Dr Jasim Bel Rumaitha, Director of Dubai Police's Operations Department, said the UAE was the second Arab country to join INSARAG after Tunisia. The move came after Lieutenant General Sheikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Interior Minister, approved a letter by Dubai Police to join INSARAG.

He said other goals included exchanging experience and information with other registered countries, benefiting from training sessions organised by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and documenting the UAE's achievements in international rescue operations.

Dubai Police's rescue teams participated in rescue operations in Iran in 2003 after the Bam earthquake. They also participated in rescue and search operations in Indonesia in 2004 and after the Pakistan earthquake in 2005.

The UAE team for search and rescue has been registered on OCHA's website, http://www.reliefweb.int. Dubai Police's rescue teams have taken part in disaster operations around the world in recent years, such as those following earthquakes in Iran and Pakistan. (Gulf News)
