UAE to vaccinate children in Horn of Africa against measles and polio

The UAE Charity Initiative for treating one million children has launched a massive vaccination programme to protect children in the Horn of Africa against contagious diseases.

The health programme is being launched through a grant offered by HH Sheikha Fatima bin Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women's Union and of the Family Development Foundation, in partnership with the UAE Ministry of Health, Red Crescent Authority, the Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Charitable and Humanitarian Foundation, Khalifa bin Zayed Charity Foundation and a number of international health agencies.

The programme, part of the UAE's relentless efforts to ease suffering in the famine-stricken countries in the Horn of Africa, will vaccinate children in the age group of 6 month and five years against measles and polio. Nearly two million children are suffering from malnutrition, a state making them fragile and vulnerable to contagious diseases and half million of them in Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia and Djibouti could succumb to death or suffer life physical or mental disorders because of a combination of drought, famine and food crisis, the worst in 50 years. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
