UAE urges UN to boost awareness on Palestinian issue

New York - UAE has reiterated that the UN and its specialised agencies need to keep the international community posted about the developments in the Palestinian issue and the Middle East in line with the UN's General Assembly resolutions in this respect.

It said that should include unveiling suffering of the Palestinian people due to the Israeli aggression, murder, besiege and settlement policies in the occupied territories. The UAE also called for activation of international media co-operation to disseminate culture of peace among the peoples of the world.

The remarks were made in a statement delivered by Khalid Ali Rabea Al Hossani, member of UAE delegation, at the Information session of the UN Fourth Committee (Special Political and Decolonization). "The general perception on the effect of modern mass media on awareness standard and human conduct, prods the international community today, more than ever before, to use the media in formulating new positive norms in international social, political and economical relations to boost the objectives of international security, peace and sustainable development amid free flow of information technology", he said.

Khalid expressed UAE's anxiety over the existing media gap between the developed and the developing countries- a thing that contributes in a way or another in the escalation of problems in some developing countries. This situation is exploited by some irresponsible media institutions to distort historic facts and beliefs of some countries and peoples.

He called for the establishment of a new global media and communication system that will exercise greater transparency and justice based on good intentions and promotion of understanding in the light of respecting religions and cultures.

"The international community has responsibilities to assist the developing countries to have access to advanced communications technology, develop their media capacities and set the world media ethics that will streamline legal and moral standards to ensure transparency and protection of media-persons, particularly in war zones", Khalid added.

He noted that the activation of UN role to face the growing world problems requires boosting international awareness about the actual role of UN, particularly in issues related to peace, security, development, respect of human rights, the combating of organised crime, terrorism, illegal arms trade, global warming and natural disasters that affect human growth.

In particular, he said, the United Nations work in the Arabic language should achieve parity with the other languages. The Department should also coordinate with other United Nations bodies and other agencies to promote the Organisation's work. In that context, more United Nations information centres and training programmes were needed.

The United Nations should also raise awareness about the Palestinian cause, the Middle East and the plight of the Palestinian people, who are suffering under Israel's occupation, he said.

He briefed the panel about the achievements of UAE in the field of information, indicating that "The UAE Government is so keen to adopt a balanced information policy, and this has resulted in the setting up of the National Media Council according to national legislations to regulate and develop perception and participation of the community in economic, political, social and environmental issues".
