UAE urges UN to put an end to Israeli offensive on Lebanon

New York - The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has appealed to the UN Security Council for intervention to put an end to the incessant Israeli offensive on Lebanese and Palestinian peoples. It has also called on the UN to mobilise and coordinate urgent humanitarian aid to help alleviate their sufferings.

The appeal was voiced by Mohammed Manie' Al Otaiba, acting charge d'Affaires of the UAE's mission to the UN, in a statement to the Security Council's monthly meeting held here Friday to discuss developments in the Middle East.

The UAE expressed regret that Israel had recently targeted humanitarian aid convoys, including that of the UAE carrying foodstuffs and medical supplies.

"The brutal, deliberate and large scale destruction by Israel of the socio-economic infrastructures in Lebanon and occupied Palestinian territories, particularly in Gaza Strip, and continuation of killing and driving people away from their homes, especially children, women and the weak... does not only pose a flagrant and inadmissible breach of all international law provisions and the UN charter, but is an organised war crime and state terrorism as well," stressed Al Otaiba.

He said such atrocious deeds by Israel should not be justified. "The UAE, as it dismisses all forms of resorting to force and military solutions since they never contribute to the settlement of outstanding issues, denounces in the strongest words possible this malicious, unceasing Israeli aggression on Lebanon and Gaza Strip," he opined.

Al Otaiba voiced his country's deep concern over inability so far of the Security Council to step in to stop the daily bleeding of the Lebanese and Palestinian peoples at the hands of Israeli war apparatus. He said such failure had sent a wrong signal to Israel thus prompting it to carry on its savage violations.

On Palestine, Al Otaiba urged the international community to pressure Israel to cease, immediately and urgently, all its military operations in the Gaza Strip and West Bank, fully withdraw all its troops, release thousands of Palestinian detainees in its prisons, stop and eliminate all unilateral measures, including those pertinent to the expansion of illegitimate settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem and its surroundings.

He concluded by asking the Security Council to charge Israel with all legal and financial liabilities, including payment of compensations in full to those affected by its irresponsible aggressive acts in Lebanon and Gaza Strip.

He said the present situation could not be contained neither could Israel realise security through violence and continual attacks against neighbouring states, but through creating an opportune political climate that could get Middle East peace negotiations back on track.
