New York - The United Arab Emirates voiced yesterday its deep concern over the increasing population in need of relief worldwide and called the international community to step up its humanitarian programmes for disaster-hit regions in the world. 'We appeal to the international family to double its efforts especially those concerned with urgent relief and development assistance to the developing and poor countries as the most affected areas plagued by disasters and conflicts,' said the UAE Permanent ambassador to the UN in a statement to the UN special session on relief assistance to disaster- zones.

He said the UAE is a generous donor of relief and development assistance, noting that relief budget allocated by the UAE for emergency and development assistance to developing countries account for 3.5 per cent of its annual GDP. 'The UAE Red Crescent hand reaches out to needy and affected populations in every corner of the world with its major operations concentrated in Palestine, Iraq and Afghanistan,' he said, adding that the UAE had offered US$ 50 million for the de-mining project in south Lebanon and US$ 30 million for the reconstruction of Afghanistan besides other donations to various needy countries.

He lashed out at some parties of conflicts or occupation for blocking delivery of humanitarian assistance to affected areas in reference to Israel. He also expressed his sorrow at the killing of UN aid workers while carrying out their noble mission because of violence and terrorism. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
