New York - The United Arab Emirates called upon member countries of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) to boost their role and relevance on the international arena in order to keep pace with changes, contain issues of concern, including those related to the national independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and security.

This came in a statement by Director of GCC Affairs at the UAE Foreign Ministry Abdullah Matar Al Mazrouei at the annual meeting of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Non-Aligned Movement which was recently held in New York on the sidelines of the 62nd session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Recent changes in international relations in the wake of World War II as well as the consequent emergence of unilateralism, the rising tide of globalization and the increasing interrelation of interests mandate effective steps by non-aligned countries to further boost their efforts to achieve their aims and promote their global status.

It reiterated the UAE's calls to revive the principles on which the NAM was founded, to reject unilateralism and attempts by the great powers to dominate the decision-making process in international circles.

The statement underlined boosting the role of the United Nations to safeguard international peace security and achieve sustainable development.

It called for stronger relations and partnerships among countries of the Southern hemisphere to add momentum to the process of development, improve living conditions of their peoples, achieve national sovereignty on their territories and natural resources as well as eradicate colonialism as well as to maintain their right to self determination.

The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) is made up of 118 developing countries and aims to represent the political, economic and cultural interests of the developing world. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
