The three month-long international Expo Zaragoza 2008 has provided the UAE with an ideal platform to showcase its experience and model for preserving and developing water resources, renewable energy and environment, according to the UAE Ambassador to Spain.

'The UAE impressive participation at the world gathering, which is supervised by the National Media Council, is expected to bring about positive results as it exposes the UAE efforts on water and renewable energy resources and conservation of the environment to the nations and peoples of the world,' HE Sultan Mohammed Al Qurtasi said in an interview to WAM on the occasion of the UAE National Day at Expo Zaragoza which is being staged from June 14 to September 14 in Spain.

He said the UAE presence in the world event was important as its theme (Water and sustainable development) revolves around efforts to find endurable solutions for water problems in the world and takes centre stage in the thinking of the UAE leadership.

'Hence, the UAE is one of the leading countries which have launched a series of initiatives for conservation and development of water resources as part of its national strategy for protection of the environment and achievement of sustainable development.

He added that the friendly UAE-Spain relations were progressing steadily on political, trade, economic, cultural and tourist domains and the UAE engagement at Expo Zaragoza with a large, distinctive pavilion has given these links a big thrust forward and mirrored the UAE bright image to the people of Spain and other peoples of countries of the world.

He indicated that the array of ceremonial cultural, artistic and folkloric programmes organised by the UAE during the event have elicited overwhelming interest, attracting thousands of visitors to see the UAE progress on culture, art and heritage. The envoy said participation of the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) at the pavilion comes within the framework of the UAE leadership's drive to transfer Abu Dhabi into a world centre for development and production of clean energy solutions. He said visitors were excited and thrilled with the Masdar, Abu Dhabi's multi-billion dollar renewable energy and clean technology initiative, and its zero carbon city, the first of its kind in the world.

On UAE efforts to develop renewable energy, he explained: 'The UAE is among the premier countries in sustainable development and provision of water for industrial and developmental purposes. The theme of Expo Zaragoza fits well into the UAE strategy for making progress on clean energy, water and environment.

As for joint Abu Dhabi-Madrid cooperation in these fields, he added the two countries had shown sincere desire to establish joint ventures to provide renewable energy sources in the UAE.

In this respect, he indicated, Masdar and Spanish engineering group Sener Group have launched a joint venture - Torresol Energy - to design, build and operate concentrating solar power (CSP) plants in the world's sunbelt regions. This joint venture will commence work on three solar power plants in Spain with an approximate combined value of USD800 million, one of which will be a CSP Central Tower Receiver System.

Torresol Energy comes from the common vision of Sener and Masdar to build a leading global company for the generation of reliable power from solar energy and contribute to the protection of the environment for future generations.

Al Qurtasi said that the recent visit of King Juan Carlos of Spain to the UAE would contribute to boosting bilateral cooperation in areas like economy and renewable energy. 'We expect a robust growth in trade exchange between the two countries which reached 900 million Euros last year,' the Ambassador said.

'As Spain, the world's 8th largest economy, attracts around 60 million holidaymakers a year, the UAE has sincere desire to tap experience of the Spanish services to boost our hotel and tourism industry. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
