NEW YORK: The United Arab Emirates has warned of the on-going security challenges in the Middle East and North Africa, saying it is a real and serious threats to regional and international security and peace.

Speaking at the Ministerial Level Security Council meeting on the maintenance of international peace and security in the Middle East and North Africa and countering terrorist threats in the region last night, Abdullah bin Mohammed Saeed Ghobash, UAE Minister of State, noted the growing of frequency of conflicts and violence, extremist ideology and terrorist activities in the region over the past five years.

He added that Daesh and al-Qaida terrorist organisations, took advantage of the political and security instability in a number of countries in the region to consolidate their control and to target vulnerable groups, recruiting them remotely to carry out their plans of sabotage inside and outside the geographical borders of the region.

During the meeting, the Minister of State highlighted that the UAE believes that the restoration of security and stability can be achieved through five key themes; the first is to resolve protracted key issues, stressing in this regard the importance reaching a just and lasting settlement for Palestinians, and the second is to support legitimate governments in conflict-affected countries to enable them to face terrorist groups and to achieve stability and security for their people, along with providing urgent humanitarian assistance.

The third is respecting the sovereignty of countries and non-interference in their affairs, explaining that foreign interference is destructive, and only generates more violence and instability.

He said that the UAE considers that the agreement on Iran's nuclear programme represents a real opportunity to open a new chapter in regional relations, calling on Iran to fulfil its obligations fully under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action and its responsibilities under the NPT and relevant Security Council resolutions, especially Resolution No. 2231.

He said that the fourth theme is to focus on finding the best ways to work collectively to support the United Nations' efforts in addressing the challenges facing the region by involving countries and regional organisations in the decision-making process, and finally, the fifth highlighted the importance of coordinating global efforts and assuming a shared responsibility to face these threats through cooperation, to eliminate the root causes of extremism and terrorism, and the development of preventive and sustainable solutions.

"We, in the UAE, are building a national model of moderation and tolerance to work on facing extremism and refute the brutal message promoted by extremists," he said, noting in this regard that Abu Dhabi hosts the Hedayah Centre for countering violent extremism. He also went on to say that the UAE recently launched, in cooperation with the United States, the Sawab Centre – New Digital Communications Hub to Counter Extremist Propaganda, in addition to issuing an anti-discrimination law.

Concluding, Mr Ghobash said that the United Arab Emirates is ready to cooperate with the United Nations and the international community to promote efforts of the establishment of security and peace in the Middle East and North Africa, and the whole world. http://www.wam.ae/en/news/emirates/1395286198728.html
