New York: The UAE took part in the two-day High-level Dialogue on International Migration and Development on 3-4 October during the 68th Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations in New York.

The UAE was represented by Dr. Saeed Mohammed Al Shamsi, Assistant Secretary of State for International Organisation Affairs, who participated alongside 60 Ministerial-level speakers. The High-level Dialogue took place in the presence of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, President of the General Assembly John Ashe and President of the Economic and Social Council Nestor Osorio.

Dr. Al Shamsi viewed the dialogue as a gateway to a new phase of international cooperation based on the contributions of international migration and labour mobility in achieving human, economic and social development.

He stated, "For the UAE, this High-level Dialogue not only marks the culmination of a seven-year march towards highlighting, documenting and measuring the benefits of international migration to development, but it also represents a gateway to a new phase of international cooperation that aims at highlighting labour mobility in the UN Post-2015 Development Agenda, maximising its impact and benefits and minimising its negative effects on development." Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon outlined an eight-point agenda to make migration work for all, calling for action to protect the human rights of all migrants and eliminate the exploitation of migrants. Also critically important to the agenda are lowering migration costs, addressing the plight of stranded migrants, improving public perceptions of migrants, integrating migrants into the development agenda, strengthening the migration evidence base and enhancing partnerships and cooperation.

"It is our collective responsibility to make migration work for the benefit of migrants and countries alike," he said.

The High-level Dialogue consisted of four plenary sessions and four interactive roundtables chaired by Ministers from different regions, who led discussions on specific aspects of migration. The General Assembly adopted unanimously the Declaration of the General Assembly's High-level Dialogue on International Migration and Development, reporting on progress since the first Dialogue convened in 2006 and proposing concrete measures for follow-up.

Dr. Al Shamsi expressed that the Dialogue has reached a key result in creating common interest in equitably and sustainably maximising the benefits of development and emphasised bilateral and multilateral cooperation to ensure its success. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
