Dubai Cares, a major humanitarian agency in the UAE, has launched a fundraiser to provide food for children in the famine-struck Somalia. The "A Meal for Somalia" aims to counter the famine which the United Nations says is the worst in 25 years and save the lives of as many children as possible.

The fundraiser runs between 16 October -20 October. The two dates coincide with the World Food Day and the Universal Children's Day, respectively. According to reports by the United Nations, tens of thousands of children were killed by famine in Somalia. CEO of Dubai Cares Tareq Al Gurg said the death toll is expected to rise among Somali children with malnutrition.

In Somalia alone, the United Nations reports that there are 450000 malnourished children, 190000 of whom are suffering severe acute malnutrition - Emirates News Agency, WAM
