A senior British official has praised the UAE for its great efforts in providing sources for renewable energy. In a statement to WAM, The First Minister of Wales, Rhodri Morgan, expressed great appreciation for the UAE's achievements in that regards. He said his participation in "Friendly Energy" forum, which was held here yesterday at the Royal Meridian Hotel, reflects the commitment of Wales to boost ties with the UAE in the area of environmental protection and the provision of renewable sources of energy.

He said Wales is the most specialised in the production of renewable energy at the UK and European levels, adding that Wales had strong desire to establish strong cooperation with the UAE in the provision of renewable energy, which he described as "the energy of the future.”

He commended the Emirate of Abu Dhabi for coordinating efforts with its major partners to launch the "Source" initiative in March and for investing USD100 million to set up the "Clean Technology Fund" in Abu Dhabi. He said Wales had achieved great successes in the area of renewable energy and is ready to cooperate with Abu Dhabi in the "Source" initiative and other future projects the UAE plans to embark upon. He called on the world to cut down the level of environmental pollution by opting for renewable sources of energy.

He noted that renewable energy protects the environment and provides better life for people, adding that his country had achieved great success in the area of generating energy from wind harvesting on the sea, coast and mountains, but admitted that generating energy from wind harvesting on the sea is very expensive compared to those on the coast and mountains. "But both provide clean energy," he assured and expressed Wales' preparedness to provide Abu Dhabi with its requirements of energy plants that operate with wind or solar energy to minimise dependence on gas-propelled plants.

The British official expressed satisfaction on the outcome of his visit to the UAE during which he met with a number of UAE senior officials. He said the purpose of his visit was to encourage the private sector institutions and universities for cooperation between the two sides in order to provide alternative energy sources and clean energy to ensure better future for all.
