UAE's relief agency gives Dh154m in aid worldwide

Responding to the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the UAE Red Crescent society (RCS), last year, spent more than Dh154 million on its relief assistance delivery programme in various parts of the world in addition to providing Dhs269 million worth of relief supplies to the Palestinians.

According to RCS Chairman Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the RCS significantly made its presence felt in all affected areas, especially in Palestine and Afghanistan, where it executed several rehabilitation projects, to rebuild what had been destroyed by wars and other forms of disaster.

It also provided relief assistance to the affected people to put a small smile back on their faces. Sheikh Hamdan said the ongoing Israeli atrocities against the Palestinian people, in stark violation of their human rights, had worsened the general condition of the Palestinian people.

He praised the unique roles played by the Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum foundation and the Dubai TV through the "we are all for Palestine" campaign, which fetched over Dhs135 million. Khalifa Nasser Al Suwaidi, RCS board chairman, opined that the RCS, which celebrated last year 18 glorious years in the service of humanity, now occupies an enviable position among the world's best relief organisations.

He attributes that achievement to the unstinting backing of Sheikh Zayed and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of UAE Armed Forces Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, as well as the support and co-operation of the volunteers and donors alike.

He pointed out that the follow up of Sheikh Hamdan had also gone a long way in making the organisation attain the enviable position and the great respect it enjoys today at the local, regional and international levels.

On the local scene, the RCS has expanded its assistance activities to cover every part of the country, especially the northern emirates. At the international level, the RCS has made another achievement, having been elected, in an election held in Geneva last November, to the board membership of the Federation of the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Red Crescent representing Asia.
