The UAE is a key partner of United Nations in fulfilling its developmental and humanitarian objectives in the Middle East, commented a senior UN official in UAE. Nadir Hadj Hammou, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in UAE lauded the nation's cooperation to United Nations said yesterday on the occasion marking the United Nations Day celebrated worldwide today, according to a report in "Khaleej Times.”

"UAE has an agenda that matches with that of the UN and it plays an active role in tackling both regional and global issues. Our efforts are supported and endorsed by the local government that extends its full cooperation in pursuing various objectives and set targets including the Millennium Development Goals," Hammou said.

He also added that the United Arab Emirates will soon publish its report on the Millennium Development Goals very soon, which will indicate a positive trend towards development.

Responding to a question on the role of UN representative offices in the Middle East, the Resident Coordinator underlined that it is very crucial in terms of providing services of development and facilitating dialogue between the host country and the United Nations. 'The UN representative offices encourage the countries to respond to international obligations and actively participate in issues - both national and global," Hammou commented.

"In the present context where the region is witnessing rapid changes, UN plays an important role in ensuring the rule of law, respect for human rights and gender equality apart from facilitating over all development," he added.

On the new strategies to reinforce the image of United Nations as an impartial, independent and peace-promoting organisation, Hammou said that a high level committee comprising of prominent personalities has been constituted to review the role of UN and recommend changes. Quoting from the UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan's message on the special occasion, Nadir said that United Nations was founded fifty-nine years ago as an instrument of peace, human rights and development.

"The world is a better place today because of UN. But we can and should do better because too many people are still victims of violence, oppression, poverty, hunger, illiteracy and disease." "United Nations will only be what governments and people want it to be.

So we all should work together at building a better UN which can better respond to the needs of humanity," Nadir added repeating the appeal of the UN Secretary General to the world nations to respond with vision and goodwill. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
