UAE Minister of Economy Sultan Saeed Al Mansouri and UK Minister for Trade and Investment Lord Stephen Green attended the opening of the UK-UAE CEO Forum in Abu Dhabi yesterday.

The inaugural Forum, designed to bring together the best business minds from both countries, is jointly chaired by Nasser Ahmad Al Suwaidi, Chairman of the Department of Economic Development, Abu Dhabi and Samir Brikho, Chief Executive of AMEC plc, UK. The CEO Forum is made up of top business leaders from the UK and the UAE, and will form part of the drive to boost trade and commercial ties between our two countries, according to a joint statement made by the chairmen.

In October 2009, the governments of the UAE and the UK set the ambitious target of increasing trade between the countries to £12 billion (Dh69.6 billion) by 2015, an increase of 60 per cent.

Al Mansouri said that the UK-UAE CEO Forum is a strategic platform to link the private sector in both countries and identify areas of cooperation and mutual increase of investments between them. He added that leaders of this forum seek to raise the rates of bilateral trade between the two countries to achieve the desired target by 2015.

The Forum also creates a good opportunity for small and medium scale companies in both countries to expand their business activities, Al Mansouri added.

UK ranked among the top ten countries with the largest volume of bilateral trade between the UAE and the world.

The UAE is the UK's largest export market in the Middle East. British contractors and consultants have been involved in some of the most iconic infrastructure projects in the UAE.

In July last year, the UK/UAE task force was established as part of the UK government's Gulf Initiative to elevate and strengthen its relationship with all its Gulf partners. The task force, headed by the Foreign Ministers of both countries, HH Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan and William Hague is intended to further strengthen ties between the two countries, including a core focus on economic and commercial ties. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
