The second meeting of the UK-UAE Taskforce will take place on Thursday in the UAE, during which time, Dr Anwar Gargash, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Minister of State for Federal National Council, and Reem Ebrahim Al Hashemi, UAE Minister of State, is to receive Alistair Burt, the UK's Foreign Office Minister for the Middle East and North Africa.

Burt is leading the UK delegation on the two-day visit to Abu Dhabi and Dubai which began on Wednesday and will continue on Thursday.

The visit was to cement the two governments' commitment to work together and build closer links in defence, business, culture and education.

In his first speech as Foreign Minister, in July, William Hague announced the establishment of the taskforce for the two historically linked nations.

Joint efforts

"I can announce today that the Prime Minister has launched a joint taskforce with the United Arab Emirates as part of our efforts to elevate links with the Gulf," Hague said.

"It will develop options for strengthening our ties across the board."

Burt is the first minister to visit Dubai since the UK's May general election.

"I am delighted to be visiting the United Arab Emirates and I particularly welcome the opportunity to visit both Abu Dhabi and Dubai," Burt was quoted as saying in a press statement.

Burt was to meet Reem Ebrahim to discuss strengthening bilateral ties. He was also to visit members of the UAE's thriving business community and undertake a visit to Dubai Ports World.

The topics of education and youth were also to be raised at a roundtable discussion at the British Council. – Gulf News
