UK Parliamentarians Visit British University in Dubai

A delegation of British Members of Parliament from the All-Party UK-UAE Parliamentary Group, APPG, has visited the British University in Dubai (BUiD) as part of their five-day familiarisation tour of the United Arab Emirates.

Among the delegation, led by Hugo Swire MP, the Shadow Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, was Tobias Ellwood (Conservative), Mark Hendrick (Labour), and Ann Keen (Labour).

The parliamentarians praised BUiD's work, calling it an "exciting development between the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom, which will support enhanced development and discovery." Part of BUiD's role is to support collaborative research between Masters students in both countries on a range of issues, including technology, finance, engineering, teaching and the built environment.

The University is supported by partnerships with leading UK institutions, including the University of Edinburgh, the University of Birmingham, the University of Manchester, Cardiff University and the Cass Business School at City University, London. "We are delighted to have welcomed the Honourable Members to BUiD and to be able to share with them the dynamics of the institution, the progress we have made since establishing operations here in the UAE and to have discussed how we see BUiD fitting into the larger picture of the UAE's and the region's education platform," said David Lock, BUiD's Registrar and Acting Chief Executive.

The delegation held discussions on progress to date and saw the early results of a number of collaborative projects between UK and UAE students. "We look forward to further talks and collaboration with groups from the UK, so as to identify ways in which to develop greater understanding and relationship-building that can only lead to long-term mutual benefit," added Lock. The APPG was established in 2003 to promote a better understanding of the UAE in Britain's Government and Parliament. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
