Paris - The international convention on cultural diversity which is currently being discussed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is crucial to sustainable development, said Saqr Ghobash, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Information and Culture.

Ghobash who is leading the UAE delegation to the UNESCO meeting said the gathering was important because it would defined the role of cultural diversity in maintaining the pluralism of identities.

The meeting which began on May 25 is aimed at evolving an international convention on cultural diversity. "We are discussing the draft convention, which covers various aspects of cultural diversity. This convention is crucial to the issue of sustainable development,” said Saqr Ghobash in a statement to WAM.

The draft convention had its start in 2001, when the Member States of UNESCO adopted a "Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity". The Declaration emphasized the principles of pluralism, respect for human rights, promotion of creativity, and international solidarity.

To expand upon the Declaration, the UNESCO General Assembly decided that the question of cultural diversity as regards the protection of the diversity of cultural contents and artistic expression should be the subject of an international convention.

Other members of the delegation to the meeting include Bilal Al Badur, Assistant Undersecretary for Cultural Affairs and Dr. Hussein Ghobash, UAE Permanent Representative at UNESCO. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
