Peter Hansen, The Commissioner of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, UNRWA, yesterday lauded the UAE for the assistance it extended to the organisation to enable it carry out its responsibilities. During a press conference in Abu Dhabi, Hansen said that the UAE provided US$28 million at the latest appeal for support, making it the highest Arab donor to UNRWA. He said that UNRWA was lacking sufficient funds to meet the needs of the Palestinian people, particularly those whose houses were demolished in the latest Israeli military actions. He said that about 2000 Palestinians lost their houses in Rafah, south of Gaza strip, in the latest Israeli onslaught on the area in October where more than 200 houses were destroyed.

He added that more than 8000 Palestinians lost their houses in Rafah and a large part of the town was converted into ruins, while 12,700 people were left without shelter in Gaza due to Israeli's demolition policies over the last three years. Hansen said that URWA was able to provide only 228 shelters to people who lost their houses while he estimated the estimated cost for giving shelter to all refugees to US$46 million.
