UNRWA thanks UAE for supporting the Agency's budget

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) welcomed the UAE's donation of US$ 2.5 million to its budget.

It was earlier last week UAE had made the donation upon directives from President HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The donation stressed the UAE government's unwavering and continuous support to the Palestinian people and to efforts of UNRWA to alleviate their suffering and provide them with dignified life.

UNRWA held UAE's stance in high esteem and urged all countries and stakeholders to increase their contributions to UNRWA to enable it to meet the rising needs of Palestinian refugees.

UNRWA welcomed the donation, which it said came at a time when the Agency was facing severe financial difficulties after its financial reserves drained up. The Agency has also been facing a projected deficit in the regular budget for 2010 worth US$140 million.

The Commissioner General of UNRWA Karen Abu Zeid warmly welcomed the donation and said that the Agency is "very grateful to President HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, as well as to the Government of UAE for this generous response to the appeal launched by the UNRWA for assistance in the face of its overall budget deficit".

"We highly appreciate the level of Arab contributions in response to our emergency appeal for the Gaza. However, we were less fortunate in securing the desired donations to supplement our general budget, which we employ for our operations in our schools, health centers and the provision of other critical services for the refugees", the UNRWA Commissioner General said.

She added: "I profoundly value the understanding displayed by the United Arab Emirates about the difficulties we face and also appreciate the encouragement it gave others to follow the suit ".

The pledge is UAE's second donation of its kind this year, as it had donated US$1mn earlier this year bringing the total contribution to US$3.5mn. This is the largest Arab annual contribution the Agency has secured in the last twenty years towards its budget. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
