John Holmes, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator has lauded the prominent role played by HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister in humanitarian causes worldwide.

Holmes, who is currently visiting the UAE, noted that Sheikh Hamdan, in his capacity as Chairman of the UAE Red Crescent Authority (RCA), is a strong proponent of UN's humanitarian and relief programmes. He particularly lauded the numerous initiatives launched by Sheikh Hamdan to ameliorate the suffering of the needy in many troubled spots around the world. "We have closely been following the admirable field work being done by the RCA all over the world", said Holmes in remarks during a visit to the RCA yesterday.

The UN official was received by Saleh Mohammed Al Mulla, Acting RCA Secretary General. In a meeting attended by a number of RCA officials, Al Mulla and Holms conferred on current humanitarian issues, including adequate means of responding to unforeseen emergencies. Deteriorating humanitarian conditions in Palestine, Iraq and Afghanistan also featured in the talks.

On RCA coordination with sister international relief agencies, Al Mulla said the charity body have had close contacts with international organisations, including the UN-affiliated agencies. Recently, he said the RCA and UNDP worked together to provide aid to victims of tsunami in Asia. On the initiative of HH Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, a special Woman Refugee Fund was set up in Afghanistan to assist women refugees. Several other projects were also implemented in conjunction with the UN in Asia, Africa and the Middle East. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
