UN pledges on global issues must be fulfilled - UAE

New York - The United Arab Emirates exhorted the international community to make good the recommendations and commitments undertaken by a series of UN summit conferences on development, social issues and environment. In a statement to the UN General Assembly's Second Committee on World Economy, Mohammed Hareb Al Muhairbi, member of the UAE delegation to the UN, said his country's call comes in the belief that economic development is an essential right of the people.

He expressed regret at the remarkable decline in global economic performance in the past few years compared to the early 1970s. Al Muhairbi said the decline had had a reverse impact on developing countries, particularly those dependent on aid from developed countries and international donor institutions. He argued that the failure of the World Trade Organisation's ministerial meetings in Cancun, Mexico, last September to reach an agreement on farm subsidies has made the economic outlook for the developing world gloomier.

Al Muhairbi said the UAE's distinguished economic performance had prompted the international community to place its confidence in the UAE and hence selected it as a venue for the 58th annual meetings of the IMF-World Bank. Muhairbi said the prime force behind all these accomplishments is President His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

Sheikh Zayed, Muhairbi pointed out, has been awarded no less than 15 Arab and international prizes and medals, in appreciation for his efforts in the field of environment and its development. The most recent one was the UN Shield for his endeavours in environmental preservation and desert control. He added that the UAE has continued to render financial and material aid to developing countries, especially those which are most affected by armed conflicts, such as Kosovo, Afghanistan, Palestine and Iraq. Al Muhairbi said the UAE is a key member of the team of donor countries involved in the reconstruction of Iraq. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
