Cairo - UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan has said that the UN resolution 1701 which ended the month-long conflict between Israel and Hezbollah should be backed up by a series of measures on the ground, including speedy return of the displaced and reconstruction of the devastated areas.

Addressing the extraordinary meeting of the Arab League Ministerial Council, Sheikh Abdullah said: "Resolution 1701 would be hollow if it is not backed up by a series of measures such as speedy return of the displaced, reconstruction of the destroyed areas, exchange of detainees, and resolution of the Shibaa farm issue".

Sheikh Abdullah who is also the chairman of the Arab League Ministerial Council underlined the need to reinforce the unity of the Lebanese people in such a way as to enable the state to assert its control over the country's territorial integrity.

Citing the incursion of Israeli troops yesterday into the Lebanese territory, Sheikh Abdullah called on the Security Council to adopt measures to check any violations of the ceasefire in Lebanon.

The Minister pledged political, economic and humanitarian Arab support to Lebanon as it emerges from the vagaries of the Israeli aggression. "The fact that the Lebanese have demonstrated unity and solidarity during the crisis was encouraging. That unified stand became the basis for the common Arab position. It is on the basis of this common ground that we are working to implement resolution 1701", said Sheikh Abdullah.

The minister pointed out that resolution 1701 was an important step towards attaining a comprehensive settlement to the Arab-Israeli conflict. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
