Director General of the UAE Ministry of Social Affairs Abdullah Rashid Al Suwaidi reviewed Tuesday with the UN's Commission for Social Development the efforts of UAE for social integration with particular focus on persons with disabilities, youth and older people.

The 47th session of the Commission for Social Development instituted by United Nation's Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) is being held in New York under the chairmanship of Kirsti Lintonen of Finland.

The briefing by UAE was also attended by UAE's Permanent Representative at UN Ahmed Abdul Rahman Al Jaramain and Deputy Chairman of Political and Social Mission in UAE Anwar Osman Baroot.

Al Suwaidi also briefed the Commission on the paramount results of the 'Abu Dhabi International Conference For Aging' which was held with the noble initiatives of HH Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak.

The conference concluded with serious recommendations for providing the best services for older persons. Among these recommendations was the call to issue an international convention on the protection of the rights of the older people, Al Suwaidi noted during the briefing.

Chairperson Kirsti Lintonen lauded the noble efforts of Sheikha Fatima in the field of humanitarian services and her ardent endeavor for the progress of women. Lintonen also hailed the status and position the women in UAE has attained, and welcomed the UAE's call for issuing an international covenant on the rights of the older people. She pledged that this recommendation will be included in the final report the Commission prepares for submitting to the UN.

During the meeting, they also made an agreement, according to which UAE-as a member of the Social Commission- will cooperate with the Commission for Social Development in implementing its various programmes for achieving the desired goals.

Social Integration is the priority theme for the 2009-2010 review and policy cycle, taking into account the relationship with poverty eradication and full employment and decent work for all.

It encourages Governments to continue their efforts to mainstream the concerns of older persons into their policy agendas, bearing in mind the crucial importance of family intergenerational interdependence, solidarity and reciprocity for social development and the realization of all human rights for older persons, and to prevent age discrimination and to provide social integration.

Al Suwaidi will address the session shedding light on the policy of UAE for achieving social integration as well as the country's humanitarian role on the global level aimed at helping children and blind people in the developing countries. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
