US Ambassador to the UAE Michele Sison has praised the UAE for its support and solidarity to the US in the wake of Hurricane Katrina which struck Southern US on September 1. "Once again, His Highness President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and the people of the United Arab Emirates have generously extended the hand of friendship and solidarity to the people of the United States,” said Sison in a statement here Tuesday.

Sison added: "In the wake of the terrible destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina, which struck the southern United States on September 1, destroying thousands of innocent lives and causing immense suffering, the United Arab Emirates has contributed the generous sum ofUS$100 million to the relief effort. The urgently-needed humanitarian donation offered by the UAE to the victims of the storm is a significant and welcome contribution.”

The US envoy noted that the UAE government has been a staunch ally of the United States in the international fight against terrorism. "The immediate support expressed by the UAE after Hurricane Katrina reminded us again that our friends around the world are there for us in our time of need. We Americans here at the Embassy and in the United States were overwhelmed by the warm and compassionate response that we received from our friends.”

She added that the messages and support of His Highness the President, Sheikh Khalifa and His Highness Sheikh Hamdan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, were very much appreciated by President Bush and the people of the United States, said Sison, adding: "This latest act of friendship reaffirmed the close ties between our two countries.”

"We will never forget the friendship and support that we have received from our friends here in the UAE and around the world. On behalf of the American people and especially the victims of Hurricane Katrina, I would like to extend heartfelt thanks to His Highness President Khalifa and the people of the UAE for their generous contribution to alleviating the suffering caused by this terrible catastrophe. The gesture reminds us that, as US. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said on September 2, responding to other generous offers of assistance from around the globe: "We are all part of the same community.” (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
