US bias towards Israel criticised

Abu Dhabi, (WAM) A UAE English newspaper today criticised the US bias towards Israel, despite of all Israeli aggression against the defenceless Palestinians. Commenting editorially on the issue, the Dubai-based' Gulf News' said,' despite the years America has been a supposed neutral mediator in the Middle East, it seems the administration has little understanding of events there, present or past. With such ignorance, there can be no hope for the future. 'Take the present situation. For nearly two months President Yasser Arafat has been confined to his quarters by a hostile Israeli army pointing guns directly at Arafat's front door. A greater indignity to an elected leader is difficult to imagine. But, the paper went on to say, not content with that, Israel gains endorsement of its action from its long term supporter, the American administration, who condemn Arafat and demand he choose 'peace over violence' if he wants to continue talks with America and Israel.

The latest to join the litany of demands of Arafat is Colin Powell, US Secretary of State, who is usually considered less hawkish than his contemporaries in the White House. However it seems he is anxious not to be left out of the movement towards a more aggressive America, with its 'either you are for terrorism or you are with America' mantra. For Powell apparently perceives Arafat as being to blame behind all the terrorism that has been taking place in Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza. He is thus ignoring two very obvious things, which an impartial observer can immediately see. Namely, Israel is the instigator of terrorism as it is the occupier of illegal land. If Israel withdrew, as required by the UN resolutions, then there would be no further violence from the Arab side. Furthermore, Arafat has condemned all violence on behalf of the Palestinian National Authority. Yet he is hampered from taking the much-demanded action, ensconced as he is in his own home. If America and Israel want movement in the Middle East, then the best line of action is reverse,' the paper concluded. (WAM)
