A senior US Army officer has praised the UAE's urgent initiative to send relief material and its expressions of sympathy to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Major General John Castellaw, Chief of Staff of the US Central Command, told a press conference yesterday: "I would also like to thank personally and on behalf of the people of the United States the expressions of sympathy and actual large resources we have received from the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait and other countries of the region throughout our recovery from the hurricane which hit the US coast."

Major General Castellaw is currently in Dubai on a routine visit. Speaking at a round table discussion which was organised by the American Embassy in the UAE, yesterday, he said: "The outpouring has been really heartfelt and heart-warming and very much appreciated. "Even one of the countries that was devastated by the tsunami, Sri Lanka, has expressed their sympathy and offered its resources to assist in those affected areas." The Chief of Staff of the US Central Command who has served his country for about 33 years described the UAE-US cooperation as good. (The Gulf News)
